How Polite Particles (Khrap / Kha) and Street Food Spice Levels Work in Thailand

Adding a polite particle to the end of every sentence transforms any short request into warm, respectful Thai. Male speakers end statements and questions with ครับ (khrap); female speakers end statements with ค่ะ (kha, falling tone) and questions with คะ (kha, high tone).

  • Controlling Chili Heat at Street Stalls: "Mai phet" (ไม่เผ็ด) means no chili at all. However, if you order Som Tum (green papaya salad) in a mortar that just pounded 10 bird's-eye chilies, residual heat remains—say "Mai sai phrik loei" (ไม่ใส่พริกเลย — do not put any chili at all). For mild warmth, say "Phet nit noi" (เผ็ดนิดหน่อย — a little bit spicy).
