Bangkok BTS Skytrain (Rabbit Card), MRT (EMV Contactless) & Chao Phraya Boats Explained

Why Bangkok BTS and MRT use different payment systems, how to tap Visa/Mastercard on MRT, when to buy a Rabbit Card or ฿150 BTS Day Pass, and riding the ฿16 Orange Flag boat.

Why You Cannot Tap a Credit Card at BTS Skytrain Gates (Yet You Can on MRT!)

Bangkok's rail network is split between two operators:

  • MRT Underground & Monorail (Blue, Purple, Yellow & Pink Lines): Tap any contactless Visa or Mastercard credit/debit card (EMV) directly on the gate reader when entering and exiting. Fares run ฿17–฿45 per ride.
  • BTS Skytrain (Sukhumvit Light Green, Silom Dark Green & Gold Line): Does not accept contactless bank cards at the turnstile. Buy a stored-value Rabbit Card at any BTS ticket office (฿100 card fee + cash or QR top-up; show your passport once to register) or buy the ฿150 Unlimited BTS 1-Day Pass.
  • Chao Phraya Express Boat: Take BTS Silom Line to Saphan Taksin (Exit 2, Sathorn Pier) and board the local Orange Flag Boat (฿16 flat fare) to ICONSIAM, Wat Arun, Wat Pho (Tha Tien), and the Grand Palace (Tha Chang). Run your daily ride numbers in our Bangkok BTS, MRT & River Boat Calculator.
