Ayutthaya (Bangkok & Central Plains)
For 417 years (1351–1767), Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya was one of the largest and wealthiest capitals on Earth—visited by ambassadors of Louis XIV and encircled by three rivers. Today its UNESCO Historical Park preserves towering red-brick reliquary prangs, headless sandstone Buddhas, and the iconic Buddha head cradled inside living Bodhi tree roots at Wat Mahathat.
Getting There & Around: Only 48–70 minutes north of Bangkok by SRT train from Krung Thep Aphiwat or Hua Lamphong (฿20 in a classic 3rd Class breeze-cooled fan carriage, or ฿245 in 2nd Class AC Express). Take the ฿10 cross-river ferry outside the station straight onto the historic island and rent a bicycle for ฿50–฿60/day.
