Why Bangkok BTS Skytrain and MRT Metro Use Separate Payment Systems

Bangkok's urban rail network is operated by two different concessionaires, which is the #1 source of confusion for first-time visitors:

  • BTS Skytrain (Sukhumvit Light Green, Silom Dark Green & Gold Line to ICONSIAM): Accepts the stored-value Rabbit Card (฿100 card fee + top-up at any BTS ticket office; passport required for registration), single-journey QR tickets, or the ฿150 BTS 1-Day Pass (breaks even at 4+ long BTS rides in one day). Foreign Visa/Mastercard contactless cards do not tap directly at BTS turnstiles.
  • MRT Underground & Monorail (Blue Line to Chinatown/Grand Palace, Purple, Yellow & Pink Lines): Accepts Visa and Mastercard EMV Contactless tap-in/tap-out directly at the gate! It does not accept the BTS Rabbit Card on the Blue/Purple lines (though Yellow & Pink monorails accept both EMV and Rabbit).
  • Suvarnabhumi Airport Rail Link (ARL): Runs from BKK basement floor B to Phaya Thai (BTS Sukhumvit interchange) in 26 minutes for ฿45 ($1.30), connecting at Makkasan to MRT Phetchaburi.
  • Chao Phraya Express Boat: From BTS Saphan Taksin (Sathorn Pier), take the local Orange Flag Boat (฿16 flat fare) to ICONSIAM, Wat Arun, Wat Pho (Tha Tien), and the Grand Palace (Tha Chang), or the electric MINE Smart Ferry (฿20–฿30).
