Tipping & Night Market Bargaining Etiquette in Thailand (฿ THB)

How much to tip Thai massage therapists, drivers, and restaurants, plus how to bargain politely with a smile at Chatuchak and Chiang Mai night markets.

Where to Tip in Thailand (and Where Not To)

  • Thai Massage & Spa Therapists: Always tip your masseuse directly in cash: ฿50–฿100 for a 1-hour foot or Thai massage at a local shop, or ฿150–฿300 at a luxury hotel spa.
  • Street Stalls & Food Courts: No tip is expected.
  • Air-Conditioned Restaurants: Check the receipt for a 10% Service Charge. If none is included, leaving ฿20–฿100 in cash is warmly appreciated.
  • Night Market Bargaining: Fixed prices apply on all food stalls and when price tags are clearly displayed. For clothing and souvenirs without price tags at Chatuchak or tourist night bazaars, counter politely with a warm smile at 70%–80% of the initial quote.
